Iowa Remembers, Inc.

What it is: 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
What it does: Iowa Remembers helps underwrite a statewide annual retreat for families of Iowans who have died as the result of service in Iraq and Afghanistan. The organization raises funds primarily through proceeds from an annual 5k run/walk event in Central Iowa. The "Iowa Remembrance Run" was first held Aug. 22, 2010. For a description regarding the 2012 event, click here. The next Remembrance Run will be held Sep. 29, 2013 at Raccoon River Park, West Des Moines, Iowa.

Paws & Effect

What it is: 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
What it does: Trains psychiatric service and therapy animals for use by Midwestern military veterans and others diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.). In 2011, the organization named a litter of black labrador puppies in honor of the 34th Infantry "Red Bull" Division. Paws & Effect raises funds through donations and the conduct of agility dog trials.

What it is: 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
What it does: Perpetuates the camaraderie of those who have served with the 34th Infantry "Red Bull" Division since 1917. Underwrites and supports efforts to memorialize and preserve the organization's history. In addition to an at-large national membership, maintains local chapters in Iowa, Minnesota, and East Coast states.

What it is: Group of writers interested in professional, academic, journalistic, and literary writing on military themes and topics.
What it does: "The Military Writers Guild exists to gather writers committed to the development of the profession of arms through the exchange of ideas in the written medium. Through its members, The Guild will encourage an open dialogue from diverse perspectives, thereby supporting the study of military affairs, spread knowledge of the military profession, and increase the assistance available to those writing in the national security space. The Guild will help foster a strong peer ecosystem focused on writing about military affairs through our ability to, 'Advocate, Collaborate, and Promote.'"
